Abstract: The name Simao pine has commonly been used for occurrences in Simao area (about 23°N). It had been nominated "Pinus kesiya Royle ex Gord, var. langbianensis (A. Chev.) Gaussen" in the Flora of China (Vol.Ⅶ.) But P. kesiya var. langbianensis was recorded on the Langbisn Plateau near Dalat (12°N)where is in southern Vietnam. There is a long distance about 1400km between Simao area and Langbian Plateau. The latitudes are more than 10°from Langbian Plateau to Simao area.Away from Langbian Plateau towards nortnern Vietnam and Laos to Xishuang-banna of Yunnan (China) the Pine become more rare and very scattered though it does not dispper. The theory of population genetics indicates that genetic variation is very different between two populations which are separated in a long distance. Specifically they are interrupted. And in northern Vietnam the pine is found near the border with China, but it is possible that these pines will have a closer affinity with P. yunnanensis of China. The morphological characters are recordeb in the literatures show that the Simao Pine is closer with P. kesiya than P. kesiya var. langbianensis. The auther agrees the opinion which in the south anb west of Yunnan the pine area is an extension of main Shah State (Burma) block of P. kesiya in Burma. For these reasons, perhaps it is not suitable that these pines of Simao area and Langbian Plateau are nominated same geographical variety. Simao pine should be considered P. kesiya and should not be P. kesiya vat. langbianensis.
