It is widely distributed over Baikal of the USSR, the nort-hern part and eastern part of the Mongolia and the Northeast plain and Inner Mongolia platean of China. Leymus chinensis rangeland in Northeast China belong to meadow steppe which is dominated by xero-mesic herbs mixed with a certain amount of mesic herbs based on the concept of zonal vegetation. It is one of the important pastures in temperate China.
The structure of the L. chinensis rangeland in the Northeast China is simple. The L. chinensis population occupy absolute predominance in the rangeland. The seasonal change of standing crop was determined. The peak value of aboveground standing crop appeared in the last ten days of August, which was 4758.33KJ/m2 and the peak value of underground stan-ding crop also appeared in the last ten days of August, which was 35977.65KJ/m2. The net production of aboveground was 6288.06 KJ/m2·a and the net production of underground was 19913.18 KJ/m2·a. The total netproduction of the L. chinensis rangeland was 26198.24KJ/m2·a.
